Painting Spree, Reaper and Otherworld

My painting seems to come in waves. I'll have figures on the table, languishing for months and some new figure comes in and sparks an interest and I'm off to the races. then the painted figures come off the table in batches, but the important thing is they come off the table.

Another thing I've noticed is it's easier to add figures to the painting table than complete them. Then my table gets full and I can't do anything.  Every few months I just have to remove half painted figures to have some working room.

Here's the latest batch of figures

This is the Otherworld Demon Idol. Copied from the cover of The AD&D Players Handbook. I've had it since day it came out, but never got around to painting it.

I made the Candles out of green stuff and plastic card.

I tried my first lighting effect paint job.

The idol is sitting on Dwarven Forge Dungeon tiles. Love this stuff

Next up, 2 Reaper Bones Giant Rats. Man are these things big.

Not the size of dog, but the size of horse. "Were gonna need a bigger boat"

Here are Reaper Bones Giant Beetles.

Very easy to paint, mounted on 1.25 inch washers, with a Medium Gel textured base.

I think I need more, 4 doesn't get that Swarm effect

 This last guy is the Reaper Bones Toad Demon. I really like this guy

I did some very subtle shading and highlighting that is lost in the photography.

He's a big boy too.

The rocks are sea glass that I bought at a craft store. For just a few bucks, you could all sorts of shapes and sizes.

I love the menacing look on his face.

Painting update from January

Here's a few things I finished in January, but didn't get around to posting. First up some items to spruce up my Dungeon. One of these days I'll get around to actually playing a game instead of just blogging about it. For me having all the little details really brings a table to life. You can't have enough accessories or scenic items. The more you have the more life like it becomes.

So this is a mix of stuff I've been collecting over the years.

I have a lot more to paint but this is a good start.

WS is Windsword Accessories. I think some of their stuff is Hirst Arts
RB is Reaper Bones
MM is Mega Miniatures, sadly now out of production.

Next up is Otherworld Stirges

 A Stirge is a mosquito-like monster from the 1st edition of AD&D.

At Fall In I picked up a Swarm Pack for 1/2 off since Architects of War was dumping their line of Otherworld Mini's. Too bad as I would pick some up at every convention. I hate paying for shipping.

 I got half of them painted up.

Mean little bastards.

Good thing they only have 1 hit die.

Hopefully real life will ease up some so I can get back to painting and terrain building. Until then, thanks for looking, Xin

Big update, Reaper, Otherworld and GW

I've been on a painting tear lately. I'm painting as much as I can. So here is the latest offerings. Some just finished and some finished back in Dec but never got around to posting.

First up is a GW or Marauder Ogre from 1989.  I've used him many times back when the Empire could have Ogre Units. I never was found of the wife beater tee-shirt, so it's been on my painting table for a repaint for the last 5 years. I finally asked my Friend Lou, if he could sculpt on some armor. As you can see below, he did a fantastic job. I also cut off the sword and used a weapon from a Ral Partha Giant.

Next up we have a Reaper Bones Figure, Labella DeMornay, Banshee. It's a great sculpt. The best part is I didn't have to paint it, I just did a light green wash. I mounted it on a 40mm GW base. On the base I added some skeleton bits I had left over from a GW skellie box. I added some static grass, some grass tufts, and flowerd tufts.

Here is another translucent Reaper Bones figure, Ghostly Summons. Another great sculpt of rising spirits. Again I did a light green wash, but this time I added a light white dry brush on the "smokey" parts of the sculpt. Again mounted on a 40mm gw base, The figure has an integral base, which looks like a summoning circle. So I attempted to paint the runes a glowing blue. Not sure how well it comes out in pictures though.

Here is the 2nd of the Otherworld Trolls. I painted the first one up back in June(Link). I picked up the 2nd one off ebay for good price. I forgot the method and paints I used the first time so it took some experimenting to get it to match the first one. Mounted on a GW 40mm base, with some decorative elements.

And last up we go back to Reaper Bones, Vermin Spiders. I've been painting with a dungeon crawl in mind, but I picked up pack of scenic elements from Windsword Accessories with this cool tree stump and log so I wanted to use it for a base. Mounted on 1 inch Fender Washers.

The Windsword tree stump is on the right. The dead tree on the left is a real branch. The large stones are bits of sea glass.

Otherworld Troll painted up

This is my first Otherworld Miniature[Link]. Otherworld specializes in recreating iconic Monsters from the 1st addition of AD&D. Really really great stuff. Full metal too, not plastic or Resin. A tad on the pricey side but worth it. This is Troll II[Link] from the Dungeon Monsters line. I would have bought both Trolls but the vendor at Cold Wars only had one left. If you like the old D&D monsters, do yourself a favor and check out Otherworld Miniatures.

I much prefer this version of trolls as opposed to the slightly more cartoon-ish Games Workshop style. Most likely since D&D was my gateway drug into RPG's and Wargaming, some 30 odd years ago.

I am very happy with the way that it came out, and I look forward to picking up the other sculpt at Historicon. Here's the pics.

I have an idea of a troll based warband for skirmish gaming. I need some sort of spellcaster/shaman for my warband. How about a Hag/ Banshee/ Evil women kind of figure? Anyone got any recommendations?
