The Oldworld Army Challenge 2, May's entry.

So here is the update for May and the The Old World Army Challenge.

For May I painted Dark Elf Corsairs and a Sorceress

 Here are the Corsairs. Insane amount of detail but fun to paint.

 The one problem with Corsairs is the poses. Very hard to fit together as a unit. I ended up marking the bottoms for placement, once I found a combination that fit together.

 I love this lady. So evil.

 June is done, will post shortly and then a final wrap up post.

January's Painting Submission for OWAC2

Here is my January lot for the Old World Army Challenge.

As this was the first unit painted, I really struggled to come up with a paint scheme. I must have painted 8 or 9 different trial paint schemes. Not on all, but on 1 or 2 figures at a time. Some of the Xbowmen have 3 or 4 coats in different places.

It was frustrating but with some encouragement from the group, I pushed through and landed on a scheme that I think looks good. I'm still not 100% happy with it, but good enough.

First up is a unit of Repeating Crossbows, a Repeating Bolt Thrower, and an Assassin. I was also painting a single Dark Rider, but had to drop him to complete the challenge in time. I might have to drop the Dark Riders unit from my painting challenge army.

The field of Dead....projects

I will be the first to admit I have the "new shiney" syndrome in a bad way.

So when I'm painting a figure and I lose interest I slide it back to the back of the painting area. I paint on a 12x12 ceramic floor tile. So it starts like this....

1 Start painting a unit of Figure A.
2 Become bored or disinterested in Figure A,
3 Start painting Figure B, Figure A gets pushed to the back of the tile, I will get back to it, I Swear.
4 Become bored or disinterested in Figure B,
5 Start painting Figure C, Figure B gets pushed to back of tile. Figure A gets pushed off the tile.
6 Rinse repeat.

Old World Army Challenge, January submission

Here is the 2nd installment for the OWAC, submitted in January. My first entry, for November is here. The December entry was missed. It was my "mulligan".

The OWAC started on a Facebook group to motivate members to paint oldhammer lead lying around for 20+years. You have to paint 1000 points, 200 pts a month for 6 months, and a one month miss(mulligan).

For January I picked Dragon Ogres. I really love these models.

 These I picked up off ebay about 6 months ago.

First step was to rebase them. I didn't like such big models on square bases. I ordered 40x60 bases from Games Workshop. It better fits the model and looks better, while maintaining the same frontage.

Old World Army Challenge, November's work

What a crazy few months. Real life was very busy since me last post. And it's amazing how quickly time flies by without posting.

So to catch up, here is my submission for the month of November.

First up are 2 old Marauder Miniature Chaos Knights. I love the solid lead horses. Heavy Metal.

So here is one of the knights almost done. I couldn't come up with a painting scheme I liked, so he might have 2 or 3 layers of paint on him.

I finally landed on scheme I liked. Basically just dark armor with a green tint.  Here's a couple of shots from different angles. Unfortunately I suck at taking pics, so some of the colors are washed out. Backdrop is a graveyard photo set I did for my Undead Army.

When moving the figures from my painting table to my photo setup, I dropped this guy. Thankfully no breakage, he only came off his horse.

November is done, though I only did a basic job on the shields, I might go back and redo them.

Next is December's submission, 10 Chaos Warriors.

Joining the Old World Army Challenge

In the Facebook group Oldhammer in the New World, an idea sprang up to have an army painting challenge. A casual way to generate some motivation to finish those long forgotten projects.

So two of the members, Iannick Martin and Chris Sabick, came up with the rules and format and launched a blog to chronicle the painting challenge. Blog is here and will be updated by the users as we go along. The Old World Army Challenge.

The basics are paint 1000 points of 3rd or 4th edition Warhammer Fantasy armies in 6 months. 200 points a month with a one month Mulligan. Post updates as we go along so we can all see the progress.

38 people signed up for the challenge. Here is a chart of the armies involved.

It will be fun to see the armies develop. I am going with Chaos. I have a smattering of lots of different armies, but Chaos was the one I had the most unpainted lead for.

My Vampire Counts Army now has Bats!

I continue to push forward with my VC army. The latest edition are 3 Bat Swarms. I didn't have official GW bat Swarms, but I did have some Reaper Bones Swarms.

Very easy paint job. In fact I spent more time on the bases than I did the figures.

That stupid scenic vine didn't want to stay glued.

I also did a small modification. The Swarms are molded stop a gravestone. I didn't want them all the same so I cut off the molded one and glued another one in it's place.

Funny thing is, it's hard to see the difference. Oh Well. Here are some pics.

My very first Miniature Conversion

I have been digging through the basement looking for Old Warhammer figures. I've been buying them since 1990 or so. I knew I had a Lich from way back and couldn't find him. Spent most of the morning painting/searching. I finally found him.

This is my first converted figure. I thought I was so clever. LOL. Anyway here is  a 1992 Marauder Miniature Liche and Paladin. Well ex-Paladin.

The Lich is going in the painting queue. It's only been 25 years. I will find another suitable head and reanimate him(see what I did there?)

Getting a jump on Frostgrave: Ghost Archipelago

Frostgrave: Ghost Archipelago will launch soon. I think End of October. So it's time to start putting together terrain and monsters for battling on the Ghost Islands.

First up is an iconic Dungeons and Dragons monster, the Displacer Beast.

I was inspired to start with this one since Wizkids came out with a line of unpainted high quality plastics earlier this year. The line of figures is Nolzur’s Marvelous Miniatures. An officially licensed D&D line. I loved the figure when I saw it. It just looks right at home in a jungle. So I will make up stats for it, once the rules are released.

Here it is painted up.

Lovely new Minotaur

I stumbled across this new Minotaur figure from Rebel Minis. The pose and painting are superb. I couldn't help myself. I ordered it right away. Don't tell the wife.

Digging up the Undead

So for the last month or so, I've concentrated on painting up the Undead. Now that I have some core units done, I'm looking at Heroes and Lords.

I dug this guy up in my basement last night. (get it, dug him up.) 

I painted him about 1992, give or take a few years.  He will now be repainted and added to my growing(risen) Vampire Counts Army.

Dire Wolves for Vampire Counts

The next unit in my Vampire Counts Army is Dire Wolves. I don't have any official figures, in fact I really don't like the current version that GW is selling. 

I love the older version, but they are a little hard to find.

 I rummaged around the basement and found some BattleMaster Wolves. The goblin riders long gone these would do just fine.

I used milliput to cover up the saddle. I am a sculpting noob and can only handle the most rudimentary jobs.

 A mix of Medium Gel, sand and rocks for base texture.

 I usually get the bases painted before going on to the figures. I leave flock as the very last step.

 Very quick and easy to paint. Black, grey, bone, red and red. Just 5 colors.

 Add the flock and they are ready for their photo shoot.

The only draw back with these figures is the mono pose. But for virtually free, I can't complain. 

Next up another Skeleton Unit. Zombie unit on deck and Bat Swarm proxy figures on order from ebay.
